Arc Ecology: Our Mission

Arc Ecology is a non-profit, public interest organization concerned with the ecology of humanity and its place in the global ecology. Arc Ecology combines the sciences, economics, and community planning, with education and advocacy to help inform the public agenda.

Arc Ecology's goal is an environmentally and economically sustainable, socially just society. Our objective is to empower grassroots community stakeholders in public policy-making, to advance environmental and economic sustainability, justice, and to promote international peace. Arc Ecology provides the scientific technical, economic/ planning, and political organizing support to achieve true grassroots input and imbue governmental policies and actions with community values.

Founded in 1983, in San Francisco, California, as ARC/ Arms Control Research Center, Arc Ecology's programs currently focus on the environmental, economic, and social impacts of federal facilities and activities, the management of public resources, and the impacts of militaries and militarism.

The issues we address aren't academic to us, our staff live and work in communities struggling with these issues. For ten years, Arc's office was only a mile from a shipyard repairing nuclear Navy ships. So we know from experience what it's like to deal with these problems. It is Arc Ecology's direct experience that informs our programs and enables us to provide our neighborhood and regional organizational constituents with the help they need to prevail.
