Project: Military & the Environment
The military poses a substantial environmental threat both domestically and overseas. In addition to the potential effects of the tens of thousands of rounds of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons that remain in U.S., Russian, British, French and Chinese arsenals today, military activities have an enormous environmental impact. Today the U.S. military produces more hazardous waste annually than the five largest international chemical companies combined. The U.S. military controls more than 25 million acres of land (larger than either the state of Tennessee or the Netherlands), contained in 1,800 domestic and about 500 overseas installations. In the U.S., domestic installations are contaminated with over 20,000 toxic sites, and just under 10% of all bases are on the federal National Priorities List. Learn more about the sources of military pollution. |
