Project: East Bay HousingAffordable Housing - the Cornerstone of Sustainable CommunitiesArc Ecology staff has been assisting affordable housing advocates to ensure that affordable housing becomes a significant component of San Francisco Bay Area growth. In the City of Alameda, Arc Ecology helped Renewed Hope Housing Advocates challenge the Environmental Impact Report on redevelopment of the former Naval Air Station - resulting in the approximate doubling of the amount of affordable housing that will be built and deepening the level of affordability. Arc Ecology also helped Renewed Hope review Alameda’s Housing Element and persuaded the City of Alameda to expand its inclusionary housing programs and to enact an ordinance that will grant a density bonus or other incentives to developers who include affordable units. Arc Ecology assistance to Fremont Affordable Housing Advocates and the California Affordable Housing Law Project (of the Public Interest Law Project) resulted in major improvements to the City of Fremont’s Housing Element - including the identification of sites where affordable housing can be built and major revisions to City zoning. Arc Ecology’s technical support also enabled the Hayward Coalition for Affordable Housing to achieve improvements in their housing element. Arc Ecology also provided critical review of the
San Francisco Housing Element, as well as housing policies and programs
that are in process at the Hunters Point Shipyard and at Treasure Island
in San Francisco.
